2008-10-16 17:09:51Adlabs to digitally upgrade 500 cine screens
BUS16Business/National/EntertainmentAdlabs to digitally upgrade 500 cine screensBy Jivraj BurmanMumbai, Oct 6 IANS Adlabs Films Ltd, a part of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group ADAG, will digitally upgrade 500 cine screens in India in the next 18 months, according to a senior group executive.Adlabs will use the 80,000 km of optic fibre cable OFC for telecommunication, laid by another ADAG subsidiary, telecom operator Reliance Communications, for transmitting movies directly to the screens, said Patrick von Sychowski, chief operating officer COO at Adlabs Digital Cinema.Von Sychowski said Reliance Communications already has the FLAG fibre optic link across the globe network for telecommunication, which would be used for transmitting digitalised movies globally once the cinemas are fitted with digital projection facilities. Films are encoded at the digital cinema mastering facility at the Adlabds Film City in Mumbai, the first facility in Asia to receive the international FACT Federation Against Copyright Theft accreditation. So far, only cinema halls in Ahmedabad, Vashi, Nashik and Gandhinagar have been connected to OFC."But the process to connect all Adlabs screens to OFC has already started," von Sychowski said, adding: "ADAG has beat Hollywood in this respect." What he hinted at was that Adlabs Films has become the first entity in the world to use OFC to distribute movies directly to the screen on a commercial basis.Currently, distribution companies such as UFO distribute movies through satellite.Incidentally, it was as recently as last week that five major Hollywood studios worked out a $1-billion deal with a group of exhibitors to digitally upgrade 20,000 US and Canadian cinema screens from next year. The studios involved in the deal are Walt Disney, Viacom's Paramount Pictures, News Corp's 20th Century Fox, General Electric's Universal Pictures and Lionsgate Entertainment.Von Sychowski said OFC-transmitted distribution system benefited all stakeholders: audiences on account of the clarity of images and better sound quality; distributors as print costs are cut and delivery time saved, and exhibitors as projection is improved, attracting more viewers.Additionally, he said, the system eliminates piracy, and enables three-dimensional viewing, as well as live viewing of events such as cricket matches and music concerts without the aid of satellite."Of course, nothing will do away with piracy so long as people can walk into a cinema with a video camera. But the system we have installed will do away with piracy before the film is projected. Even after that, if a film is copied, we can trace back any digital copy to the cinemas, screen, day and the time it was recorded illegally," von Sychowski said.--Indo-Asian News Servicejb/ank/vt458 Words*06101731

NAT80National/CrimeMan who married in helicopter among 6 held for robberyNoida, Sep 26 IANS A man who solemnised his marriage in a helicopter was among six held in Noida for highway robberies. All six, in their early 20s, come from affluent backgrounds, the police said Friday. All six are also highly educated, the police said. The police arrested Vineet, 24, Sonu, 20, Sandy, 20, Satish, 25, Brijesh, 22, and Anuj, 22, from near the Sector 93 flyovers in Noida while they were attempting to loot another person."These men - all belonging to upper middle class families - took to looting and snatching activities to lead lavish lifestyles. They were involved in as many as seven loot cases," S.K.S. Pratap, station officer Noida Phase-II police station said.In fact, their habit of leading affluent lifestyles can be judged from the fact that Vineet had solemnised his marriage in a helicopter in 2005. He had taken his marriage procession in a helicopter to his bride's place in the Greater Noida area. The modus opernadi of the gang was simple. They used to hit vehicles on the road, and then get into an altercation with the car's owner. They would then snatch the car at gunpoint and flee from the spot. In some cases, these men even held the car owners captive for a while and would steal their credit cards to fund shopping excursions, and withdraw money from the ATMs with their debit cards. They would then release the car owners once their purpose was served. Vineet, a resident of Salarpur in Noida is pursuing his final year BBA from Global Institute of Management in Greater Noida. Another accused Anuj stays in Bhangel and is doing his final year B.Tech from a private engineering college in Greater Noida. Sonu and Sandy hail from Bihar. The police have recovered a Skoda Octavia and two Maruti WagonR cars from their possession. The police also recovered about Rs.150,000 worth of gold jewellery, seven mobiles, an LCD Plasma TV, a fridge, a washing machine, a laptop, watches and a 7.1 megapixel digital camera."Vineet was carrying a factory made pistol when we apprehended them. Six country-made pistols have been seized from Sonu, Sandy and Satish. A knife has also been found with Anuj," the station officer said.Of the seven cases in which the youths were said to be involved, four people have approached the police and confirmed that the stolen goods were theirs. "While one person is presently in Hong Kong, another is currently in Bangalore. We have also called others to come and identify their goods," Pratap said. The six have been booked under various sections of the IPC. --Indo-Asian News Servicesps/ak/dg493 Words26092055
2008-09-26 11:06:13How the Sahara's strangest Stone Age graveyard was uncovered
Washington, September 22 ANI: The Sahara desert's strangest Stone Age graveyard, which was uncovered in the year 2000 by a small team of paleontologists, had excavated 20 tons of dinosaur bones and other prehistoric animals. According to a report in National Geographic News, the team, which was led by Paul Sereno of the University of Chicago, scattered on foot across the toffee-colored sands of the Tenere desert in northern Niger.Referred to as a "desert within a desert", the Tenere desert is a California-size ocean of sand and rock, where a single massive dune might stretch a hundred miles, and the combination of 120-degree heat and inexorable winds can wick the water from a human body in less than a day. The harsh conditions, combined with intermittent conflict between the Tuareg tribe and the Niger government, have kept the region largely unexplored.Sereno, a National Geographic Society explorer-in-residence and one of the world's most prolific dinosaur hunters, had led his first expedition into the Tenere five years earlier, after negotiating agreements with both the leader of a Tuareg rebel force and the Niger Ministry of Defense, allowing him safe passage to explore its fossil-rich deposits. That initial foray was followed by others, and each time his team emerged from the desert with the remains of exotic species, including Nigersaurus, a 500-toothed plant-eating dinosaur, and Sarcosuchus, an extinct crocodilian the size of a city bus. The 2000 expedition, however, was his most ambitious-three months scouring a 300-mile arc of the Tenere, ending near Agadez, a medieval caravan town on the western lip of the desert. Already, his team members had excavated 20 tons of dinosaur bones and other prehistoric animals. Mike Hettwer, a photographer accompanying the team, headed off by himself toward a trio of small dunes. He crested the first slope and stared in amazement. The dunes were spilling over with bones. He took a few shots with his digital camera and hurried back to the Land Rovers."I found some bones," Hettwer said, when the team had regrouped. "But they're not dinosaurs. They're human," he added.
